If you’re looking for burial insurance and you’ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer, keep reading to find out more about your burial insurance options.

The prostate is a small gland that is walnut-shaped located between the bladder and the rectum. It is responsible for producing seminal fluid and then transporting the sperm upon ejaculation.

American Cancer Society (ACS) research has shown that prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer affecting American men today – and it is estimated that one in six men will be diagnosed with this prostate cancer at some time during their life.

The most common test to detect early-stage prostate cancer is the Prostate-Specific Antigen or PSA test. The normal level is 4.0 ng/mL or lower. However, a PSA level above 4.0 ng/mL could indicate early-stage prostate cancer.

Life insurance companies know that prostate cancer typically grows very slowly, and may only need minimal treatment. Although some types are aggressive and will quickly spread to other parts of the body, prostate cancer must be detected early for the patient to have a better chance of successful treatment.

The good news is that improvement in medical treatment and survival rates continue to improve. Today, life insurance companies are becoming more accepting of this condition.

Affordable life insurance coverage is now available to prostate cancer patients and survivors.

Factors that may affect prostate cancer and burial insurance eligibility:

  • The stage and grade of prostate cancer
  • The age at the time of diagnosis
  • The type of treatment you are undergoing
  • The time when treatment was completed
  • Relapses if there are any
  • Your general health

The insurance company will look at all these factors to determine how much of a risk you present. The higher the risk you are, the higher your premium will be, and there may be a waiting period on your plan.

If your cancer is successfully treated and you are have been in remission for 24 months, you have the highest chance of qualifying for the best plan at the lowest rate.

If you want to get first-day coverage and access the lowest premium, you must apply for a final expense plan that has underwriting (you will be asked a few medical questions). The most important part of burial insurance underwriting is answering health questions.

Each burial insurance company have their own set of health questions.

You will typically see prostate cancer questions in two different sections of the application. It will be asked in the “knockout” part and the “graded” section.

Here are the most common ways prostate cancer will be asked in the knockout section:

  • Do you currently have any type of cancer?
  • Have you had metastatic cancer that has spread to other parts of your body?
  • Have you ever had one or more occurrences of cancer?

Answering “yes” to any of these cancer questions in the knockout section will limit your life insurance options.

Prostate Cancer in the Graded Section

The graded section is for higher risk applicants. Graded benefit plans cost a bit more and come with a partial or full waiting period.

You can see prostate cancer in the graded section asked this way:

  • In the last 24 months, have you been diagnosed with prostate cancer or been advised to receive chemotherapy or radiation for cancer?
  • In the previous two years, have you been treated for any internal cancer?
  • In the last three years, have you received treatment for any internal cancer?
  • In the past 3 years, have you been diagnosed with cancer, or received chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer?

If you answer “yes” to any prostate cancer question in the graded section, the company will offer you their graded death benefit plan. There are times when guaranteed issue burial insurance is cheaper than the graded benefit plan.

Sometimes your best alternative option is to apply for a guaranteed issue burial insurance with no health questions asked.

If you have prostate cancer, most life insurance companies would require you to be done with treatment and in complete remission for a minimum of two years before they offer you a policy with first-day coverage.

The longer you have been in remission from prostate cancer, the more positive life insurance providers will consider your application.

It means that if you have had prostate cancer and undergoing treatment within the previous two years, you will only be eligible for guaranteed issue burial insurance with a two-year waiting period.

Aside from the health questionnaire, the insurance companies will also electronically check your prescription history to know your current health and verify your answer to the health question.

The information they will get from your prescription history check includes:

  • Name of your medications
  • Dates they were prescribed
  • Quantity or dosage taken
  • Frequency taken each day

Insurance providers are also on the lookout for particular drugs that will indicate high-risk applicants.

If you are taking any of the following medications:

  • Casodex
  • Flutamide
  • Eligard
  • Lupron
  • Niladron
  • Trelstar
  • Vantas
  • Zoladex
  • Zytiga

Taking any of these medications will show to the insurance company that you are a prostate cancer patient, and they will classify you as a high-risker applicant.

There are different types of prostate cancer treatments that the insurance companies consider before offering you a plan and approving your application for coverage:

A few of these medical treatments are:

  1. Prostate Cancer Treatments
  2. Biological therapy
  3. Castration
  4. Castration (chemical)
  5. Chemotherapy
  6. Cryosurgery or Cryoablation
  7. External beam radiation
  8. Hormone therapy
  9. Radiation therapy.
  10. Radical prostatectomy
  11. Transurethral prostatectomy

If you are going through any of these treatments, you will be considered as a prostate cancer patient.

If you have finished prostate cancer treatment and you’re in remission for more than 24 months, you have access to the best prostate cancer insurance options. Some insurance companies only ask about cancer within the last 24 months.

If it’s been more than 24 months since your last cancer treatment, you can now honestly answer “NO” to the cancer question in the application. You can now be eligible for level death benefit with first-day coverage to those life insurance providers that only have a two-year look-back period on prostate cancer.

You can now choose the best plan with the best rate and no waiting period.

Level death benefit plan with immediate coverage will be offered to you if your prostate cancer treatment is more than 24 months. You will have full coverage from the first day, and you will not have a waiting period on your plan.

If you pass away due to any reason, your beneficiary will receive 100% of your death benefit amount.

It is a simplified issue burial insurance plan with no medical exam and only health questions to answer. Your premium amount is fixed and will not increase during the duration of the policy. The death benefit amount is guaranteed never to decrease.

The level death benefit is cheaper compared with a no-questions-asked guaranteed issue final expense insurance.

We always work to get our clients level death benefit with first-day coverage whenever possible. We will try to get you approved with this plan if there is no other medical condition that would disqualify you. Sometimes this is not be possible, especially if your prostate cancer is very recent or your treatment is less than two years.

Every life insurance company generally asks about prostate cancer within a minimum period of 24 months.

If you were diagnosed with prostate cancer and undergoing any form of treatment for the last two years, you are labeled as a higher risk applicant. Your life insurance option is a graded death benefit with partial coverage during the first two years of the policy.

If your prostate cancer has metastasized to other tissues within the prostate, you would need a treatment plan. If any treatment or therapy was required, and your last treatment date was two years ago, insurers will offer you a graded death benefit plan. This plan has a partial first-day coverage.

Graded death benefit works this way:

If you purchased a $25,000 face amount, and you die within the first year of the policy, your beneficiary will receive 30% of the death benefit amount. If you pass away in the second year, they will receive 70% of the death benefit. The 100% of the death benefit will be given to your beneficiary if you die after the two years and beyond.

If you are receiving treatment for prostate cancer within the last two years, you cannot avoid a waiting period. There are times when it’s cheaper to purchase a guaranteed issue burial insurance than a graded benefit plan.

Whatever your medical condition may be, we will help you get the best policy with the best price.

With a current diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, most life insurance companies will only offer you guaranteed issue life insurance.

These are the instances where guaranteed issue life insurance is your best option:

  • Currently diagnosed with prostate cancer
  • Current surgery to remove prostate cancer
  • PSA of 1.0 or higher after surgery
  • Hormonal therapy after surgery
  • Gleason score of 8 or higher
  • Stage T2c or greater
  • Any recurrence of prostate cancer

You don’t have to submit to a medical exam or answer any questions about your health to qualify for guaranteed issue life insurance. If you have a current diagnosis of prostate cancer, you can quickly get this plan if you are between the ages of 50 and 85  and a U.S. citizen.

While it costs a bit more than a level death benefit plan, you will not have to worry about the chances of being denied coverage because you are currently diagnosed with prostate cancer and undergoing treatment.

Guaranteed issue final expense insurance offers insurance coverage despite a prostate cancer diagnosis, but it has a two-year waiting period for natural causes of death.

However, this plan will pay 100% of your death benefit if you die from an accident during the waiting period. If you die within the first two years, the company will refund all your premiums to your beneficiary plus 10% interest.

After the two-year waiting period, you are 100% covered, and your beneficiary will receive your full death benefit if you pass away for any reason.

Guaranteed issue life insurance is excellent even if it has a waiting period because the insurance company will approve your application even if you have prostate cancer or any other pre-existing medical condition.

Many factors determine the cost of your premium, but it will generally be influenced by your age, gender, amount of coverage, length of treatment, and time of remission.

Your overall health condition will also affect your premium amount. Other pre-existing health conditions such as heart attack, stroke, or diabetes may affect your eligibility and rates. But, if your health is in good health condition after your prostate cancer treatment, you will likely qualify for a level death benefit and pay the lowest premium possible.

However, if you have a current diagnosis of prostate cancer or your prostate cancer has metastasized to other parts of the body, your best option will be a guaranteed issue life insurance which is 15-30% higher than a level death benefit.
